Austria’s social security system
Austria provides comprehensive social protection for all people living and/or working in the country. The social security system provides financial and medical protection in different life situations, including:
Prevention & health promotion
Sickness & medical treatment
Accidents & work‑related injuries
Incapacity for work/invalidity
Maternity
Unemployment
Old age, retirement & survivors’ pensions
Long‑term care
Social assistance
How the system works
- 1
Compulsory insurance
- 2
Solidarity principle
Contributions are income‑based. Benefits depend on needs—not on income or individual health risks.
